The Chin

For the purposes of this blog, let's assume Cowher plans to get back into coaching. I know all of the reasons Bill Cowher won't come to Cincinnati so let's not go there right now. Here's why I picked Cowher:

1.) He has worked for and seemed to appreciate working for the Rooney family; a family that runs its business much like the Brown family. Now, don't get me wrong, the Rooney family are MUCH better owners than the Brown family but the ownership style is similar.

2.) Cincinnati is a town (I'm gonna choke on this one) much like Pittsburgh: small, conservative, rabid fan base, etc. he will own this town!

3.) If this team is lacking character and discipline there's one man to turn this around and now - Cowher!

4.) We can't let Cleveland get him! Can you imagine the chin in a Browns shirt and hat?

5.) The pieces are in place and can produce a winner for Cowher in a season or two.

6.) Cowher is a "Cincinnati-kinda-guy". He's cut out of the mold of Pete, Sabo, Boomer - guys who have owned this town through their work ethic, hustle, determination and leadership. This town would go crazy for him!

7.) I absolutely despised the guy when he walked the Pittsburgh sideline. Anyone that was able to evoke that kind of angst must be a great coach!

Feel free to add your input to this list. We'll be adding more stuff to the site later! Who Dey!

True. I am completely off the Marvin bandwagon. The only difference between me and you is that I was thinking of Marty Schottenheimer. Fire Lewis now and hire either one of them. Let them get started now.

The game was ugly. How do you go into the season needing linebackers, running backs, offensive linemen, and receivers? Who the heck is on the effin roster anyway? Special teams have sucked the entire time he has been head coach. And by now, this team is all his. Who is left from the pre-Marvin days?

It’s not that we have lost three games. It’s the way we look. I said after the Baltimore game that I’d take that win, but it raised more questions than it answered. I think if we get the ball back in Seattle with a minute left, there is a good chance we win that one. But the wins only mask the suck that is this team.

Who decides to go into a season short-handed on LBs? This, after getting rid of one of the best men on defense---who happened to be a linebacker! The Bengals were counting on two things happening. 1) A guy with a broken neck would come back this year, and 2) A guy with suspension problems would be back. How do you pin your hopes on that? Urgh.

Maybe that was Mike Brown’s fault. But Marvin should have been prepared. He acts like he is going through something that no one else has ever had to. Plus, poor execution, uninspired play calling (you get an interception on the 30—why aren’t you going for gold the very first play??? Of course, they’re expecting it. You still do it. You damn sure don’t run the ball), and his deer in the headlights press conferences, all say take him out now.

Be bold. Hire The Chin Now!

I'm not ready to pull the plug on Marvin and his regime just yet. Granted, I am starting to lean in that direction. I for one appreciate the loyalty Mike Brown has shown this coaching staff, I believe to build a successful franchise, you have to give a head coach and his staff longer than a two year plan, especially in this world of free agency. Where I disagree with Mr. Brown is the control he still wields in the organization and that he won't get Marvin the help he needs in a general manager. Coaches that have to play head coach, gm, etc., don't have time to truly be a head coach. I.E. Holmgren, Gruden, Denny Green, etc. The franchises who have this hierarchy of owner, gm, head coach are the franchises who year in and year out display consistency and barely seem to miss a beat. See Indy, Baltimore, New England Denver to name a few. Instead of pushing for a head coach, push for the hiring of a general manager. Mike Brown listened to the public and the fans of Bengals football in finally going outside the Bengal family to hire a head coach, maybe he would do the same with a general manager? If a new head coach is the direction chosen, I want someone other than Cowher. Would his desire for another championship be greater than when he was in Pittsburgh? Name me a coach who has come back after retirement and won his team a championship? Parcells didn't do it, Johnson didn't do it. Gibbs hasn't done it and doesn't appear to be anywhere close. I think we are looking at this from the wrong angle.

Tex - thanks for the feedback. A couple of thoughts, though. Mike Shanahan is both GM and Head Coach and to point to a coach that has come back and won - about about the old sentimental favorite, the "Crying Coach" - Dick Vermiel?

Yea, good ideas...I'm writing the Bengals and suggest they hire you as their GM! Thanks for this blog JB!

Let's get Cowher in here! The whole co-ordinator thing or college coach thing isn't working. And for godssake, PLEASE start a new blog to hire a General Manager!

No, a careful read of the posts will tell you we want a new coach more than we want Cowher. While I'm a fan of his as a coach, it doesn't have to be Cowher but he's the first name on anyone's list. Thanks for the feedback.
